Principal, Byrne.UrbanDesign
• Architecture, Urban Design, Urban Planning
• Master of Town Planning
John Byrne specialises in integrated city-making across a wide range of urban contexts. His commitment is to environmentally-sound, socially-aware, economically-vital and design-informed planning.
He understands that cities are crucial to our global future. With a background in architecture, urban planning and social policy, John’s interests are therefore in helping clients use creative processes, rigorous review and effective communication to achieve more sustainable environments to meet the needs of the future. As a senior member of the urban planning, urban design and architectural professions, John is involved in contributing to a broad range of public and private projects and policy areas.
His work ranges across the urban spectrum: from the design of individual neighbourhoods and affordable or market housing projects through urban mixed-use development, TOD and town centre precincts, knowledge-based precinct or corridor projects to regional planning and infrastructure issues, and in policy and project contexts. He is used to working at the interface between agencies of governments, major institutions, the professions, private industry and the community. Over decades, work in which he has been central has received many awards.
He is particularly interested in the interactions between the social and physical dimensions of cities and in the role that urban planning and design plays in the pursuit of more resilient environments and healthy communities to meet the increasingly better understood range of human needs.
